ʻĪʻī’s life from the spring of 1868 up to his death in the spring of 1870. Far from being a tragedy, his retirement proved to be one of his most productive periods. An unexpected occurance in the last year of his life would mark it as one of the best years of his life, and during this time he also embarked on what is arguably his most important achievement—his life writing series. This final chapter explores ʻĪʻī’s motives for depicting lives, and evaluates his accomplishments. An account of his death, which occurred before he had finished his series, and of the tributes paid to him, conclude the book.
