This chapter chronicles his early childhood, his entrance into court, and his early experiences as a kahu to Liholiho (Kamehameha II), and closes with Liholiho’s death in England. When ʻĪʻī began his service in 1810, Kamehameha had just finished uniting the Hawaiian Islands under his rule. ‘Īʻī was born into a lineage with the right to petition for entry into the royal court as kahu. But it was not a privilege without its perils, and ‘Ī‘ī had to prove himself worthy of trust and respect. ʻĪʻī’s genealogy is examined because of its importance to understanding the kuleana (set of rights and responsibilities) of kahu aliʻi (royal attendants) in the social, cultural, and political systems of his time, and the evolution of the important service kahu provided to aliʻi.
