This chapter identifies a move toward the model of trial centeredness as top a priority in reforming the Chinese criminal procedure system. The author traces the development of investigation centeredness and trial centeredness in the history of judicial systems and explains how a greater focus on the latter could prompt better attention to physical evidence, curb the use of torture, and encourage direct testimony.
