This chapter examines approaches to understanding and expressing the higher educational moʻolelo of Kanaka ʻŌiwi based in critical race theory (CRT) and shaped by interviews with Kanaka ʻŌiwi graduates of higher education. The chapter begins with a general background on CRT and the ways it has been articulated by others as we see and understand it through a Hawaiian critical consciousness perspective. It then offers ideas on developing a Kanaka ʻŌiwi–focused CRT based on a variety of data pieces and ongoing analysis, including interviews with Kanaka ʻŌiwi participants in higher education. It also explains how this approach to expressing and understanding Native Hawaiian higher education moʻolelo helps advance research in ways that are culturally oriented, anticolonial, and meaningful in theory and practice to Kanaka ʻŌiwi and other Indigenous peoples in similar contexts.
