This chapter offers an overview of War Films depicting the period 1931-1953 in East Asian cinema and a critical introduction to the chapters contained in Divided Lenses. The chapter introduces the book’s two sections. “Part I: Screen Histories of War in East Asia,” which includes six introductory essays that provide overviews and discussions of central historical trends at work in various “national” cinemas, including China, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, and the United States, and “Part II: Reading War Trauma”, which features an additional five essays on specific themes present in cinema portraying this period, such as the depiction of comfort women in Chinese film, the Nanjing Massacre, and how nationalism has been renegotiated in contemporary Japanese war films. The introduction concludes with an overview of recent cinematic trends in China, Taiwan, Korea, Japan, and elsewhere depicting war in East Asia.
