This chapter examines how one global process, the expansion of mobile phone technology in Vanuatu, affects marriage and social relations in a place particularly concerned with protecting and reviving traditional culture. In the village of Big Tautu on the island of Malekula in Vanuatu, using the mobile phone to find marriage partners can be seen as a transformation of traditional marriage and kinship practices. Because mobile phone technology facilitates traditions like marriage and reciprocal exchange relationships, mobile phone technology has become, in a sense, a part of Tautuan kastom (customary or traditional culture). Some aspects of mobile phone use, however, go against Tautuan kastom.
