This chapter follows Tokiko’s early years paying special attention to her role as a village teacher and a divination specialist raised in the Shugendō tradition. More than just a descriptive survey of her life through the 1850s, it situates Tokiko at the intersections of micro- with macrohistory, of the eternal with the contingent, and of the rural village with the high heavens, showing how she formed an identity as a mediator between the cosmic forces and the historical circumstances on the ground.
