Broadcasting to Ourselves at the Quan Họ Festivals
This chapter focuses on a particular form of staging of traditional culture, village festivals in Bắc Ninh Province, to explore how visual imagery and sound have been used to frame quan họ as Bắc Ninh provincial culture; this, in turn, is part of the broader project to popularize the genre as a form of cultural heritage. It examines how sound and image are used to construct an “authentic” picture of quan họ by investigating how festival attendees learn to “see” the picturesque when they “hear” quan họ. It considers this form of broadcasting as a kind of amplification that echoes beyond the local and that is indicative of the rising importance of cultural heritage in a global setting.
