A Postscript on the Grain of Sand
A Postscript on the Grain of Sand
This postscript discusses the long-dominant structure of the Chinese lifeworld in contrast to the Cartesian lifeworld of the West. It considers, from a Marxian perspective, three ways of experiencing and knowing the world that are shaped in modes of production/reproduction: mystification, reification, and simulation. It explains how mystification is intertwined with the ritual mode of production/reproduction, which in turn is concerned with the authenticity of the artifice, a preoccupation of social economy. It suggests that mystification is tied to an ideological mode of producing/reproducing state-based capitalisms while reification is simulated through semiosis. It concludes by emphasizing the importance of understanding how these modes of production/reproduction influence our notions of value.
