Women's Movements and the Filipina

Mina Roces

University of Hawai'i Press

This chapter concentrates on the use of media—radio and television in particular—to disseminate the new feminist epistemologies to a potential mass audience. It analyzes how radio and television transmitted women's studies courses “on the air” and offered ordinary women alternative role models. This chapter contends that the radio and television shows were like classrooms, with activists intending to give audiences a basic women's studies course while giving practical advice on how ordinary women could empower themselves. Such advice included information about the kinds of services that these organizations offered to women such as counseling for victims of domestic violence, and health clinics for physical checkups.
