The Girls’ Squad

The Girls’ Squad

(p.75) 6 The Girls’ Squad

This chapter discusses the Girls' Squad. The officers of the Girls' Squad had a number of duties, which include directly or indirectly implementing the laws restricting prostitution, stopping women from walking the streets, issuing or voiding the papers of the brothel women, checking out the red-numbered houses, maintaining the files and papers for the Police des Moeurs, and, on the “assigned days,” keeping order and calling roll for all of the women with diseases in the Dispensary. With the signing of Article 187 and Article 34 of the Police Law, which gave the Girls' Squad many powers, the abuse of authority for dishonest advantage or the proper execution of one's responsibilities becomes an issue of individual conscience.

Keywords:   Girls' Squad, prostitution, brothel women, Police des Moeurs, authority abuse
