(p.37) Chapter 3 A Woman’s Place Is in the Garden
Mary, the Devil, and Taro

Juliana Flinn

University of Hawai'i Press

This chapter takes a closer look at the nature of women's work on Pollap and the prominence of their productive activities. The responsibilities of women on Pollap include cultivating and preparing the staple foods, producing key material items, caring for children and the sick and elderly, ensuring cleanliness, and striving to maintain respectful and harmonious relationships. These activities are associated with their identities as women such that the extent to which they carry out these tasks demonstrates their worth as women and their commitment to the care and well-being of others. The cultivation of taro is the most salient aspect of women's work, which provides a foundation for all other forms of nurturing.
