This concluding chapter considers how this volume emerged from a symposium “Changing Contexts—Shifting Meanings: Transformations of Cultural Traditions in Oceania” staged in conjunction with an exhibit at the Honolulu Academy of Arts, Life in the Pacific of the 1700s: The Cook/Forster Collection of the George August University of Göttingen. It reviews how the various chapters have examined Oceanic encounters, past and present. Taken together, they begin to map the terrain of a history of Oceania's globalization. This epilogue summarizes the highlights of the conference. It concludes by discussing the lessons learned from the contributions to this volume about the history of globalization in the Pacific Islands.
