Everyday Resistance in the Villages

Everyday Resistance in the Villages

(p.128) Chapter Five Everyday Resistance in the Villages
Disturbing History

Robert Nicole

University of Hawai'i Press

This chapter turns to the covert, non-momentous, and unspectacular actions through which ordinary people subverted authority in their day-to-day lives. These are stories and voices from history’s underground—those characters and utterances that have always been there but have not been immediately visible or audible. They tell of villagers’ consistent grumbling about their chiefs, the transformation of the ancient luveniwai ritual into a subversive pastime by village youths, ongoing tax evasion, village absenteeism, the boycott of the registration of land titles, the manipulation of religious rivalries by villagers to evade communal obligations, and the use of education as a means to break free from the cycle of chiefly exaction, tax work, and agricultural labor.

Keywords:   villager resistance, ordinary villagers, luveniwai ritual, tax evasion, village absenteeism, boycotts, religious rivalries, education, colonialism, authority
