Tourism in Hawaii: An Overview

Tourism in Hawaii: An Overview

(p.13) Chapter Two Tourism in Hawaii: An Overview
Developing a Dream Destination

James Mak

University of Hawai'i Press

This chapter provides an overview of the tourism industry in Hawaii. It discusses the history, visitor patterns, and the struggles the industry has faced over the years. Tourism, as it now exists in Hawaii, is essentially a post-World War II phenomenon, although it experienced a massive growth after 1959. The rise in tourism’s importance in Hawaii’s economy was not only because of the spectacular growth of tourism, but also because of the stagnation and the long-run decline of Hawaii’s traditional exports of sugar and pineapple. Thus tourism growth transformed what was once a sedate economy dependent on commodity exports based largely on plantation agriculture into one based largely on the export of services.
