This chapter argues that the Zhou conquest of the Shang dynasty is the single most important historical event portrayed in classical and pre-classical Chinese texts. These written accounts considered the conquest as the moment that had created the Zhou political, social, and moral order; thus, lessons from this event were included in every lessons for rulership and sagehood. The annexation also depicted the coupling between the act of war and the cessation of all strife as well as the bloody overthrow of a corrupt ruling house and the establishment of a civil administration that settled the known world. The Zhou founders called this dual nature as the Civil and Martial Kings.
