This chapter provides context for the activities of the lay practitioners who seek solutions to ethical dilemmas in the temple’s outer courtyard by comparing them to the resident temple monks and other temple-goers. It presents a spatial analysis of the temple’s three courtyards and the different groups that gather in them. The latter half of the chapter discusses in detail the politics of space in the outer courtyard considering why laypersons are able to preach and pass out their own Buddhist-themed media there when both activities are officially prohibited by the temple authorities.
