This chapter makes a close study of The Mirror of Yoshiwara Beauties, Compared (Seiro bijin awase sugata kagami, 1776), published by Tsutaya Juzaburo (1750–1797) and Yamazakiya Kinbei (shop active late seventeenth to early nineteenth centuries), with images contributed by important ukiyo-e masters of the time, Kitao Shigemasa and Katsukawa Shunsho. The book’s images purport to show the quarter’s beauties as though occupied in their daily activities, but this chapter demonstrates instead that the presentation of the figures supported a larger marketing strategy used for the quarter.

Keywords:   Tsutaya Juzaburo, Yamazakiya Kinbei, Kitao Shigemasa, Katsukawa Shunsho, Yoshiwara, publishing, bijinga, courtesans, guidebooks, brothels, collaboration, marketing
