The opening chapter introduces readers to the theoretical and sociocultural framework of the book. It outlines the parameters in which the study took place, and introduces a brief history of Pacific migration to Aotearoa New Zealand and the subsequent development of Pacific festivals. This chapter also provides an overview of the literature that was influential in the theoretical development of this study. This book is inherently interdisciplinary and crosses the areas of Pacific studies, festival studies, sociology, human geography, and ethnomusicology; each of these are considered. Finally, each of the main themes that comprise the second half of the book—logistics, leadership and development; the function of music; community; and place, identity and belonging—is introduced and outlined, demonstrating how they support the overall argument that Pacific festivals reflect how the Pacific diaspora is situated and constructed within New Zealand.
