Abstract
This chapter examines how the “Southeast Asian Heritage” as a cultural construct came to be, by detailing the varied histories of the region; its environment, architecture, and cultural development; and in particular the evolution of the Western and indigenous perceptions of its ruins—as both part of the landscape, and as sites to be valued and even preserved. In this way ruins have become a peculiar type of historic resource. They are not buildings nor are they simply archaeological sites. They are, in a sense, structures caught in between. Thus the chapter lays out the groundwork for a closer look into ruins and their conservation.
