The Heart of the Matter

The Heart of the Matter

Gender, Intimacy, and Consumption in the Production of Shōjo Manga

(p.1) Chapter One The Heart of the Matter
Straight from the Heart

Jennifer S. Prough

University of Hawai'i Press

This chapter first sets out the book's purpose, which is to examine the shōjo manga industry as a site of cultural storytelling, illuminating the ways that issues of mass media and gender, production, and consumption are entailed in the process of creating shōjo manga. It then turns to the notion of “what girls like,” a phrase that editors and artists use consistently to discuss what shōjo manga is and how it is produced. The remainder of the chapter deals with affective production and consumption in shōjo manga; definitions of shōjo and manga; and the background of the present study. An overview of the subsequent chapters is also presented.
