Abstract
While Kṣemendra's telling of the Dharmarucy-avadāna in his Bodhisattvāvadānakalpalatā may be the only other known Sanskrit version of the story of Dharmaruci, this does not mean that this tale is otherwise absent from Indian Buddhist literature. In fact, stories quite similar to that in the Dharmarucy-avadāna appear more than once. This chapter considers these parallel versions in order to strengthen the argument that the Vibhāṣā's Mahādeva story relies on some version of the Dharmaruci story. Second, they will complicate the notion that there is one and only one way to view the relation between the two traditions of the Mahādeva and Dharmaruci tales. Finally, these stories, each with its own variations, will enable us to broaden our perspectives on the meaning of the overall story within an Indian context.
